Welcome to National Centre For Maritime Policy Research

                                          THEME OF IMC-2009

Indian Ocean, endowed with vast hydrocarbon resources and a key geographical location, today forms as hub of international strategic, economic, social and political activities. The region is thus characterised by growing strategic competitions and co-operations involving regional and extra regional powers. This coupled with non-traditional threats like terrorism, narco-smuggling and environmental hazards are fast changing the security and stability dynamics in the region. It is in this background that peace loving littorals are faced with serious challenges towards protection of maritime and sovereign jurisdictions from traditional and non-traditional threats. The broad theme of the conference focused on “traditional and Non-traditional Threats, Force Postures and Extra Regional Interest: Implications for Arabian Sea and the Gulf Littorals” and their impact on the security and stability of the littoral countries.

                                               OBJECTIVES

  • Enhance awareness on contemporary maritime security and stability dynamics in the region.

  • Identify traditional and non-traditional threats in the region.

  • Examine impact of growing strategic competition and cooperation, particularly extra-regional presence on littorals.

  • Examine the legal rights, responsibilities and relationship among Arabian Sea and the Gulf littorals.

  • Suggest measures and steps forwards development and implementation of Pakistan’s maritime security policy.
